Epidural Injection in L5 S1
Today I have received for my 4th epidural injection in my lumbar spine. I have herniated discs in the L4 L5 S1 of the spine. The first 3 times he gave me the the shot in the L4. Most of my pain is in my butt area and into my left leg. I asked if he could give the shot directly into the L5 S1 disc this time. So that’s where I received it and now I’m just waiting for the soreness to go away and see if there is any relief. The first 3 shots only worked for a few days, I’m really hoping this one works. If this one doesn’t at least last for a month or two, there would obviously be no reason to get anymore.
Currently I’m undergoing Physical Therapy, Pain Medication, and just received my 4th epidural injection. I’m not at the point where I can’t go about my daily activities, but I definitely had to make adjustments to the way I do things and my lifestyle. The level of pain changes daily; most of the time I can tolerate it. I do get fatigued easily and sometimes just need to lay on my back or sit down for a bit due. I also have some numbness in my lower left leg and foot.
I originally injured my back from weight training with heavy squats. I haven’t weight trained in about 1.5 years, under doctor’s orders. I actually haven’t exercised in that long either. I’m thinking of starting some type of light aerobics just to get back in shape and for overall health. Anyone have any suggestions? I decided to discontinue heavy weight training. I may do a few light weight exercises but nothing overhead that is going to compress my spine.

I notice I am not alone in dealing with these issues. I have a bulging L4 and herniated L5 – S1. I have been doing spinal decompression therapy (SDT) with my chiroprator for about 2 weeks now (2x/week). I have noticed some improvement and the pain is easily tolerable. I would suugest finding a clinic that offers SDT and give it a try.

Wow, weird how some people have the same symptoms I do, it’s nice to know I”m not alone. I was in a car accident in 2007, I had an MRI in Sept 2008, and 35% of L5-S1 taken out in Feb 2009. I am having a lot of pain again in my back and down the back of my left leg. Parts of my calf and my foot are numb. I don’t have medical insurance right now, so I am kind of out of luck on what options I have. I don’t know what I’m going to do. The pain can get really bad, but sometimes I can tolerate it.

If you have herniation of L4-L5-& S1 I recommend ILIF spinal fusion. I had my L4-L5 done in Dec. and it was worth it, however I also recommend getting the S1 taken care of at the same time. I am 2 1/2 months post-op and now need L5-S1 fusion surgery due to severe sciatica. You’ve already gone the route of epidurals and after 4 maybe its time to have the ILIF. I was up walking on my own the very next day and even though I have to have more surgery I really recommend it for long term relief. Any type of exercise will just aggravate the disc. I tried swimming as it was no impact and had to even stop it due to the twisting. Good luck to you.
